How do I get Live Update to work with Windows Vista?

Issue

I cannot get Symantec Live Update to work with Windows Vista. What should I do?

Resolution

Delete all Symantec settings files and LiveUpdate will work

To make Symantec Antivirus run on Windows Vista, you need to remove 11 LiveUpdate settings files. The easiest way to do this is to download and run a script written by a University of Minnesota Office of Information Technology consultant.

The following instructions should work UNLESS you have previously uninstalled Symantec or any other antivirus program from your computer. In that case, the uninstall process may have left behind files that will interfere with this process. If you have uninstalled (and reinstalled or not reinstalled) any antivirus program, first you must follow the steps in the article How to uninstall antivirus software from your computer. If you have not, then proceed with the steps below.

  1. Download the script installer (login required).
  2. Click Save File and choose to save it on your Desktop.
  3. Double-click the DeleteLiveUpdates.exe file on your desktop to run the installer.
  4. At the Uninstall screen, click OK to begin running the script.
  5. On the next screen, click Yes to all.
  6. When the script is finished, run Symantec LiveUpdate.
    1. Launch Symantec AntiVirus.
    2. Click LiveUpdate….
    3. Click Start.
